Ti-tillating - Icona Vulcao is the world's first titanium supercar
A quick walk through the Geneva Motor Showwill put you in front of a number of booths manned by small companies looking to build small-batch supercars. They're impressive, but not all of them actually make it to market. One such car, the Icona Vulcano, has become a production version, and while it's expensive, there's something to be said about owning the only titanium-bodied supercar in the industry.
The Vulcano made the rounds at Pebble Beach last year, prior to becoming a proper running vehicle. Now that it moves under its own steam, it's set to be shown off at Salon Privé in England at the beginning of September. That's the perfect crowd for the Vulcano, as most folks won't be willing to spend €2.5 million ($2.78 million) on a car.
But for that money, you earn the right to the first titanium-bodied supercar in the industry. The body finish is striking bare metal. Its design language focuses on triangles, which are everywhere once you start looking. It's rocking a pretty traditional supercar style, but it doesn't look like a carbon copy of anything else.
The interior is unlike most other small-batch cars in that it's actually kind of nice looking. It features a 12.3-inch configurable display, a carbon fiber racing seat, and yet another screen replaces the traditional gauge cluster. It also has air conditioning, because we're not savages and that's not really a performance-car deal breaker anymore.
Icona calls it a hypercar, but its performance specs speak more to supercars. It's powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8, putting out 670 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque. The sole transmission offering is a single-clutch affair, which means you're going to be in for some very interesting (read: uncomfortable) city driving.
Its 0-62mph time is estimated at 2.8 seconds, and Icona claims it will run the Nürburgring's Nordschleife circuit in 7 minutes 20 seconds. That's on par with the last-generation Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, and about a second behind the Nissan GT-R.
If you positively must have something that nobody else has, the Icona Vulcano seems pretty darn impressive. But for this much money, if you want some world-shattering specs to go along with the exclusivity, you might want to keep searching.
