Windows 10 Anniversary Update. All you need to know
Windows 10 Anniversary Update
Preview – What's new? All you need
to know
Windows 10 is about to get its super-sized Anniversary Update soon, but what's going
to be new? Here's everything you need to know, including the Windows 10 Anniversary
Update release date, all the latest news, and instructions for how to download it today.
WINDOWS 10 ANNIVERSARY UPDATE RELEASE DATE
Microsoft recently confirmed that the final build of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update would
be launched on August 2, 2016.
Not long to go now, then – we're expecting current build 14393 to be signed off as RTM
(release-to-manufacturing) any moment, which means that the software is ready for
Microsoft's hardware partners to start integrating it into their laptops, desktops and tablets.
Note that while August 2 will see the Anniversary Update officially enter the wild,
Microsoft added that the upgrade will be a 'phased' roll-out, given the scale of the task,
so no need to worry if it doesn't become available for your device at exactly 12:01am.
WAIT, WHAT'S THE WINDOWS 10 ANNIVERSARY
UPDATE AGAIN?
In short, the single biggest update to Windows 10 since its launch, and one that's timed to
coincide with the first birthday of Microsoft's new OS.
GOTCHA, SO WHAT'S NEW WITH THE WINDOWS 10
ANNIVERSARY UPDATE?
We'll offer an in-depth breakdown of everything that's new in due course, but, well, quite a
lot's changed.
The Anniversary Update will look to improve on a number of essential Windows 10 features,
from voice assistant Cortana to the new Edge browser and the all-new Windows Ink platform
that'll make drawing onto Windows 10 tablets a joy.
It'll also take in every Windows 10-based device, from PC, tablets and smartphones to the
Xbox One and HoloLens, thanks to Microsoft's Universal App initiative.
As a teaser, below is a screenshot of the MSN weather app running on an Xbox One.
The upgrade will land just days after Microsoft officially pulls its free Windows 10 upgrade
offer, so the firm is adopting a bit of a carrot-and-stick approach to encourage people who
haven't already jumped over to Windows 10 to make the leap before the cut-off date.
"Look at all the amazing stuff you'll be missing! Soon you'll have to pay for all this!"
That sort of thing. It's a win-win situation for the company because, yes, after July 29,
you will indeed have to pay for Windows 10.
"Sorry, not sorry."
You can see a full list of upcoming changes on the first page of our Windows 10 review.
WHY SHOULD I BE EXCITED ABOUT THIS?
Good question. We asked our Computing Editor Michael Passingham for his expert take
on the update.
"By itself, the Anniversary Update doesn't add up to a huge amount. They're small tweaks
that'll make life easier for some, but they're not going to be enough to entice a stubborn
non-upgrader to take the plunge.
"What you should do is look at the wider context: Microsoft is actively adding entirely new
features to its showpiece operating system, something that will never happen again for
Windows 7 or 8.
"Future updates could be much bigger and contain even more useful additions, and if you
don't upgrade now, you will have to pay if the time comes when Windows 10 convinces you
it's good enough for your beloved PC."
OK, I'M SOLD. HOW DO I DOWNLOAD THE WINDOWS 10 ANNIVERSARY UPDATE?
You can get ahead of the game by signing up for the Windows Insider Program here, after
which you'll be guided on how to set up your machine to download and run the latest preview
build.
Normally, we'd advise against installing pre-release software, but as the Anniversary Update
will shortly go RTM – meaning it's ready to be pre-installed on and ship with new devices –
you can push ahead with a certain degree of confidence.
That said, you should still take all the usual precautions and backup your computer, phone or
tablet before proceeding with the install.
